Tournament Report, presented by Ryan Stanley
Two weekends ago, we held our US Open tournament. Rick Tourin took home 1st place with a score of 280. 2nd place saw a tie between Dave McGrath Jr and Martin Senecal at 281 with Jim Cullen Jr securing 4th place at 282. Michael Einsidler took home 5th while Brian Donlan took home 6th place with scores of 283 and 284, respectively. This upcoming weekend we have our Governor’s Cup, which is a two-person, Combined Stableford event. At 72 players, we have a full field and we are looking forward to a great weekend.
Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our last three Ladies Tournament Days due to the rain, but in general, participations have been up. On Wednesdays, our Men’s Tournament Days have seen an average of about 72 players, which is up a few from previous years. More people are coming out to play in these weekday events, which is something the club likes to see.
Looking forward, our Men’s Member-Guest (scheduled for July 12th) has already sold out. A full field should bring out a great day. Footjoy will once again be there to size players for shoes and the format is the same as last years (18 holes Combined Stableford, 9 holes Alternate Shot Stableford.) On July 20th, we will hold our British Open tournament (format is the same as US Open) and on July 27th & 28th, we will have our Bishop Cup. Tournament participation has been great this year and we expect July to be no different.
Membership & Marketing Report, presented by Jeff Nagel
We currently sit at 389 total members; this number is 11 more than where we were last month. In addition to membership, round totals are also up. After speaking with the Pro Shop, Jeff states that on average, we are seeing 130 rounds per day. As we continue to talk about putting a cap on membership, we will have to monitor round totals as well as pace of play. More rounds obviously means more wear and tear on the golf course, which makes it harder and harder to keep the conditioning that we would like.
Greens Report, presented by Joe Dabrowski
In recent weeks, Chris and our grounds crew has lost 2 guys, with one being a senior worker. Parkland has been able to replace both guys already; one guy has experience while one does not. I’m sure Chris will get to it in his report, but essentially, they’re just cutting grass this time of year.
Men’s Locker Room/Food and Beverage Report, presented by Mike Cioffi
Gus seems happy with how the season has been going. I have been working on a committee with Mike Foster (as well as others) to come up with a plan for a new Pro Shop/Bag Storage/Cart Buildings. In roughly 2-3 weeks, we should have a generic estimate based on the site plans that we are working with.
Deputy Chairman Report, presented by Ron Krawczyk
Ron would like to congratulate Ray Fell on his recent campaign victory. Additionally, Ron would like the commission to vote on a medical leave for both Larry Festa (knee replacement) and Tom E Murray (broken hand). Both have proper documentation and pass unanimously.
Superintendent Report, presented by Chris Johnson
As Joe stated earlier, the crew has lost 2 workers but has also already replaced them. One of the new workers has experience while the other has none but seems eager to learn. Both workers are young (18 and 20 years old) with no real direction in regards to what they want to do in life. Chris says that he intends to treat them like workers who were in with an internship.
As far as the golf course, whenever it stops raining, we will continue cutting grass. When it isn’t raining, the greens are firm, fast and very fun to putt on. The mounding on the 3rd hole has been sprayed for weeds, which should take care of them shortly. Much like the mound on the right side of 2, over a couple of years, the weeds will go away and we will have fescue on top. Chris states that he is happy with the germination on those mounds but doesn’t want to go too crazy since you can’t take the fescue away once it is there. We will continue to topdress throughout the entire year, especially when we have to get a lot of water on the greens. This will continue to help the firmness as well as the overall quality of the greens. Ray Fell noticed that the fescue left of the 13th fairway has thinned out this year. Chris states that it is the plan that they have continued to stay with over the last few seasons. This is finally how they would like to see it and they will continue with the same plan around the tops of the bunkers.
Comments from the Crowd
John Daley – The areas around the bunkers where the machine enters and exits is still an issue. John suggests that we create a local rule for free relief. Ron Krawczyk says that within your individual group, play whatever you would like but during club tournaments, you will have to play by the rules. Ron continues by saying that if we can pick out some of the worst areas, it would be a perfect Fall or Spring project; doing a few each year will help maintain the problem in the next few years.
Meeting concluded at 6:25PM
